Housing Assistance Payment (HAP)

HAP is a form of assistance available to households who qualify for social housing support and are on the Housing Waiting List [Allocation of Houses – Housing Waiting List]

The main features of the HAP scheme are:

• applicants find their own private rented accommodation
• the Council pays an agreed amount directly to the landlord (see current rates below)
• the tenant pays a rent to the Council based on the weekly household income, as per the Council’s  differential rent scheme - Differential Rent Scheme 2020‌
• the tenant also pays the landlord an amount to cover any shortfall between the HAP payment and the actual rent.
